A 2024 study in PNAS used a new laser-imaging method and found a liter of bottled water carried on average about 240,000 plastic particles — roughly 10 to 100 times more than older counts, and about 90% of them nanoplastics small enough to enter cells. The plastic comes from the PET bottle and cap, made worse by heat and agitation. Filtered tap water is generally the cleaner everyday default.

Almost never. Microplastics are defined as anything under 5 millimeters, and the fraction that matters most is nanoplastic — thousands of times thinner than a human hair. In the 2024 bottled-water study, about 90% of the particles were nanoplastics, completely invisible to the naked eye. A crystal-clear glass of water tells you nothing about its particle count; only lab spectroscopy can measure it.

Only in hard water, and only if you filter afterward. A 2024 study in Environmental Science & Technology Letters found that boiling hard, mineral-rich water can trap up to about 80–90% of microplastics inside the limescale that forms as it cools — but in soft water the effect nearly disappears, and you still have to strain out the scale. A certified filter is the more reliable, universal fix.

BPA-free tells you one chemical was removed, not that the replacement is safe. Manufacturers largely swapped BPA for close relatives like BPS and BPF, and lab studies show these substitutes have similar hormone-disrupting activity. Research has found many BPA-free plastics still leach estrogen-active chemicals, sometimes more so after everyday stress like heat, microwaving or dishwashing.

Yes. Because sea salt is made by evaporating seawater that is now full of plastic, it is consistently the most microplastic-contaminated salt of all. Global surveys find sea salts carry more particles than rock or well salt, tracking how polluted the source water was. The amounts you get from salt are tiny, but “natural sea salt” is not the clean choice it sounds like.

For chemical safety glass wins, but it isn't automatically particle-free. In a 2025 study by France's food-safety agency ANSES, drinks in glass bottles carried more microplastics than the same drinks in plastic — not from the glass, which is inert, but from paint flaking off the metal caps as they rub together. Keep choosing glass; just rinse the cap.

The “it's only an environmental problem” line is getting harder to defend. In 2024 a New England Journal of Medicine study found micro- and nanoplastics in the carotid-artery plaque of surgical patients, and those patients had a markedly higher rate of heart attack, stroke or death over the next three years. That is an association, not proof of cause — but combined with particles now found in blood, placenta and brain, it is reason enough to trim avoidable exposure.
