And above all, filter the tap water you drink and cook with, since the water going through your body all day is the bigger, more constant source and the one you can genuinely make cleaner. You don't need a plastic scare to act on this one — a natural cork handles most of it.

A 2025 study by France's ANSES agency, published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, measured microplastics across packaged drinks and found wine among the lowest at about 8.2 particles per liter — far below beer at around 82.9 and lemonade at 45.2. Wine was the exception among glass-bottled drinks, which were otherwise heavily contaminated by paint shed from their metal caps; wine's cork avoids that. A separate 2020 Food Chemistry study, however, found at least one synthetic particle in every white wine sealed with a plastic (polyethylene) stopper, so the closure still matters.

Because of the closure. In the 2025 ANSES study, glass bottles of soft drinks and beer were surprisingly high in microplastics — but the source turned out to be the paint on the outside of the metal caps, which sheds flakes as caps rub together in storage. Wine is usually sealed with a cork rather than a painted metal cap, so it skips that dominant source. The glass itself is inert in every case; the contamination rode in on the cap paint, and wine simply doesn't have one.

They can. A 2020 study in Food Chemistry examined white wines capped with polyethylene (plastic) stoppers and, using micro-Raman spectroscopy, identified at least one synthetic microplastic particle in every bottle; an optical count found up to several thousand particles per liter, though that method could not confirm each one was plastic and the numbers are debated. Natural cork is not plastic and does not shed microplastics the way a synthetic stopper or a plastic screw-cap liner can, which is one reason natural-cork wine tested so clean in the 2025 ANSES data.

Mostly from the closure and the winemaking equipment, not the grapes or the glass. Synthetic corks and the plastic liners inside screw caps can shed particles into the wine, and bag-in-box wine sits in a plastic bladder. During production, wine moves through plastic hoses, tank liners, pumps and filtration pads. Airborne fibers can also settle into open tanks. The glass bottle itself is inert, and a natural cork adds essentially none — which is why wine in a corked glass bottle measured among the cleanest drinks tested.

You can't filter wine at home, so the levers are what you choose and how you store it. Favor wine in a glass bottle with a natural cork over synthetic-corked or bag-in-box wine, decant into a glass carafe if you like, and don't store wine in plastic. But keep it in proportion: wine's microplastic load is low and alcohol itself is the far larger health consideration. The biggest lever is the drink you have every day — filter your tap water, since the water going through your body all day is a much bigger and steadier microplastic source than an occasional glass of wine.

The studies measured how many particles are present, not what they do inside the body, so they don't establish harm — and wine's measured levels are low, a small share of overall exposure that a 2019 analysis put at tens of thousands of particles a year from food, drink and air combined. With wine, the health conversation is dominated by the alcohol, not the plastic. Microplastics are increasingly detected throughout the human body, so cutting easy sources is sensible, but wine is not one of the big ones — filtered water and less plastic-packaged food matter far more.
