Mainly through what you swallow and what you breathe. Microplastics are in drinking water (bottled water especially), in food that touched plastic packaging, and in indoor air and household dust. The smallest particles can pass across the lining of the gut or the lungs and enter the blood, which then carries them around the body. Because the dose is cumulative and comes from ordinary daily sources, the practical lever is lowering the steady intake — filtering tap water, drinking from glass or steel, and keeping food off heated plastic — rather than any one-time detox.

The blood studies measured that particles are present, not what they do once there, so on their own they do not prove harm. The strongest signal so far is a 2024 New England Journal of Medicine study that found micro- and nanoplastics in the carotid-artery plaque of most patients sampled, and those patients had about a 4.5-fold higher rate of heart attack, stroke, or death over the following ~34 months. That is an association, not proof of cause, but it is exactly the kind of finding that makes reducing avoidable exposure a sensible precaution while the science matures.

Your body does clear some plastic — most of what you swallow passes straight through and leaves in stool, and particles in blood are filtered by the liver and kidneys — but researchers do not yet know how long the particles that lodge in tissue stay there, and no proven medical procedure removes microplastics from blood. Claims that a supplement, cleanse or detox flushes microplastics from your bloodstream are not supported by evidence. The reliable move is to lower how much goes in, so the amount your body has to deal with keeps falling.

Lower the everyday intake that feeds the bloodstream. Filter your tap water with a filter rated for microplastics and drink it from glass or stainless steel instead of plastic bottles. Keep food off plastic — store and reheat it in glass, never microwave plastic, and skip plastic-wrapped and heavily packaged options where you can. Reduce indoor dust with regular vacuuming and ventilation, since household air is an underrated source. These are the same swaps that cut total-body exposure, and they cost little.

Not literally everyone in the 2022 pilot — plastic was measurable in about 77% of the 22 donors, below the method's detection limit in the rest — but microplastics are now being found across human tissues, including the placenta, lungs, liver and artery plaque, so widespread exposure is well established. The amount varies from person to person and likely tracks how much bottled water, packaged food and plastic-heavy environment someone is exposed to, which is why lowering those sources is worth doing.
