What Makes a Pillow Toxic?
The measured concerns are foam emissions, which rise with body heat, flame retardants in older foam, and allergen buildup in synthetic pillows. Polyester's microplastic risk is real in general but has not been measured for pillows, and one study points the other way. Here is each one, with what the research actually found.
1. Foam gives off more fumes when it is warm, and a pillow is right at your nose
Memory foam is polyurethane, and polyurethane foam releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the vapors behind the new-foam smell. In 2014, University of Texas at Austin researchers measured how much crib-mattress foam released at two temperatures (Boor, Järnström, Novoselac and Xu, Environmental Science & Technology, 2014). Mean total VOC emissions were 56 µg per square meter per hour at 23°C and 139 at 36°C, close to skin temperature. Air sampled in the breathing zone above the mattress held 1.8 to 2.4 times the VOC concentration of the room, and they found polyurethane foam released a greater variety of VOCs than polyester foam. A 2019 study in the same journal (DOI 10.1021/acs.est.9b01557) quantified 18 VOCs from polyurethane mattresses and reported that “under sleeping conditions VOC emissions increased significantly,” with heat the main driver.
A pillow is the worst position for any of this. A 2017 review of sleep-zone air quality in Building and Environment (Boor, Spilak, Laverge, Novoselac and Xu, 2017) starts from the fact that “we spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping” and notes that mattress foam, covers and pillows can emit VOCs, phthalate plasticizers and flame retardants. It summarizes a ventilation study (Laverge et al., 2013) that found a pollutant released from the pillow reached the sleeper at a relative intake of 2.16 lying on the back and 3.39 to 4.02 lying on the side, against 1.24 to 1.73 for the same pollutant released from the mattress. In plain terms, whatever your pillow gives off, you breathe two to four times more of it than if it were spread evenly through the room.
The honest limit: those emission studies tested mattresses, not pillows, and foam emissions fall as it ages. Nobody has shown a foam pillow makes people sick. What they show is that foam is the material with the measured emissions, that warmth raises them, and that a pillow puts the source right at your nose.
2. Older foam often carried flame retardants
When Duke University's Heather Stapleton and colleagues tested foam from 101 baby products, 80 contained an identifiable flame-retardant additive, and the most common one, TDCPP, turned up in 36% (Stapleton et al., Environmental Science & Technology, 2011). Eleven of those products were nursing pillows. Two caveats keep this honest: those were baby products, not adult bed pillows, and they were bought before California rewrote its furniture flammability rule in 2013, the change that let most foam makers drop the chemicals. It is still the reason to prefer a pillow whose maker states it contains no flame retardants, as Hullo does for its buckwheat pillow and Naturepedic does for its wool pillow.
3. Synthetic pillows hold far more allergen
This is the pillow-specific finding with the strongest data, and it is about the cover more than the fill. A 1996 BMJ study (Kemp et al., 1996) found polyester-filled pillows held 8.05 times more total dust mite allergen than feather pillows. A 2000 study of 14 pillow pairs (Custovic et al., Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, 2000) found 6.7 times more cat allergen and 8 times more dog allergen in synthetic pillows. A 2004 follow-up (Siebers, Nam and Crane, Clinical & Experimental Allergy, 2004) explained why: “all 20 HDMs had penetrated the standard synthetic pillow coverings” within 24 hours, while none got through the feather pillow's cover or a newer, tightly woven synthetic one. The lesson for buyers is a dense, removable, washable cover — which every pick below has.
4. Polyester and microplastics: real in the air, unproven for pillows
Indoor air carries plastic fibers. A 2017 study in Environmental Pollution (Dris et al., 2017) measured 1.0 to 60.0 fibers per cubic meter indoors, about a third of them petrochemical. A 2019 Scientific Reports study using a breathing manikin (Vianello et al., 2019) found 1.7 to 16.2 microplastic particles per cubic meter, 81% of the synthetic ones polyester, and estimated a person could inhale up to 272 in 24 hours. But no study has measured what a polyester pillow sheds into the air, and a 2024 study of 113 students (Zhang et al., Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2024) found those sleeping on bedding with synthetic fibers had lower microplastic levels in their nasal wash. We will not tell you a polyester pillow fills your lungs with plastic. The case for natural fill rests on the foam and allergen data above. Three honest cautions. First, read the latex line carefully: Naturepedic says the latex is “GOLS- or FSC-certified,” and FSC is a forestry certification, not an organic one, so the latex is not guaranteed organic in every unit. Second, it is latex: skip it if you have a latex allergy (see the FAQ). Third, only the outer cover is machine washable; the inner cover and fill are spot-clean only, and several verified Amazon reviewers describe a strong rubber smell when new. Amazon lists the Queen at about 7.5 lb.
The pillow that most closely replaces memory foam's soft, contouring feel, without the polyurethane, and with more third-party certifications than anything else on this list.

2. Hullo Buckwheat Pillow — Best Plant-Based
Best Plant-Based
Hulls are the husks of the buckwheat seed. They lock together into whatever shape you press them into and hold it all night, and air moves through them, which is why buckwheat is the usual answer for people who flip their pillow to find the cool side. Hullo's hulls are grown in Montana and North Dakota and milled in North Dakota, the case is a preshrunk, undyed 7-ounce twill that Hullo describes as 100% certified organic cotton, and a zipper lets you add or remove hulls to set the height. Hullo states the pillow contains no flame retardants and offers a 60-night refund guarantee on its own site. Standard 20×26 is $129.
The catch is real and you should know it before you buy. Hullo itself says the Standard weighs 9 lb 12 oz (Amazon lists 8.5 lb), it is very firm, and it makes what the maker calls a “gentle rustling noise when moved.” Hullo does not name which organic standard certifies the cotton, and it does not claim the hulls are organic. 3. Turmerry Organic Latex Pillow — Best Value

Where the Naturepedic is shredded and adjustable, the Turmerry is one perforated block of Dunlop latex, zoned for firmness. Turmerry says it is “made with GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex” and that it is a GOLS-certified facility, and the Amazon listing specifies at least 95% GOLS-certified organic latex and a GOTS organic cotton cover. Turmerry also publishes lab results from ATS for its latex: formaldehyde under 16 ppm, total fluorine under 100 ppm (a screen for PFAS, the “forever chemicals”), and phthalates not detected. The OEKO-TEX and eco-INSTITUT marks on its site belong to its suppliers, which Turmerry states plainly. On Amazon it runs $89 to $99; Turmerry lists $98 Standard, $109 Queen and $131 King.
The catches. Amazon lists the sizes as 15×22 Standard, 16×28 Queen and 17×37 King, smaller than a standard pillowcase, so it will sit loose in yours. It is spot-clean only, cover and latex both. You choose a fixed loft and firmness up front, so if you guess wrong you are stuck: Turmerry accepts returns within 120 days only for unused items in original packaging. The maker also notes a light, vanilla-like scent when new that fades in days. Skip it if you are allergic to latex.

The fill is “Woolly Puffs” of 100% natural Shropshire wool — 2.5 lb in a Standard, 3 lb in a Queen, 3.5 lb in a King — and you set the height by taking puffs out through the zipper. Wool moves moisture away from your head instead of trapping damp heat, which is the complaint most people have about foam. Sleep & Beyond lists OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on both the cover and the fill (certificate 15.HCN.66088) and the Woolmark on the wool, and backs it with a five-year warranty. Know these before you buy. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a test for harmful substances, not an organic certification, and this wool is not sold as organic. Wool is animal fiber, so it is not vegan. Care is fussy: the maker says to machine wash cold on a wool cycle with no spin and not to wash often because the puffs can clump, while Amazon's listing says hand wash only. Amazon currently carries the King size; Standard and Queen are sold on the maker's site.

Naturepedic fills this pillow with sheep's wool formed into small balls rather than flat batting, which keeps it springy, and states it contains “natural wool fill ... without synthetic fibers.” The Amazon listing says it uses GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton and is made without polyester, polyurethane foam or flame retardants. Naturepedic lists GOTS (Control Union), MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL formaldehyde-free validation. It comes in Queen 20×30 ($199) and King 20×36 ($219), with a 30-night trial on orders from Naturepedic and a one-year limited warranty.
The honest catches: there is no Standard size, the fill is not adjustable, and only the outer cover is machine washable; the inner cover and fill are spot-clean only and must be completely dry before use. It is wool, so it is not vegan. It is also new to Amazon, where it holds 3.4 stars from 20 reviews as of today — the lowest score of our picks, on too few reviews to say much yet.
The cleanest paper trail for a wool pillow: certified organic fiber inside and out, plus an independent emissions certification.

6. Organic Textiles Natural Kapok Pillow — Softest Plant Fill
Softest Plant Fill
Kapok is the silky fiber from the seed pods of the kapok tree. It is light and soft, the opposite of buckwheat, and Organic Textiles says its kapok is wild-grown and needs no pesticides. The pillow has a side zipper so you can pull fill out, the organic cotton cover comes off and machine washes, and the label says “No Polyester.” Organic Textiles lists $129.95 Standard, $134.95 Queen and $139.95 King; Amazon carries the Queen at $109.95.
Two honest problems. The company describes the cover as GOTS certified, but the certificates it links to belong to its fabric mill and had expired — the GOTS certificate in November 2023 and the OEKO-TEX certificate in August 2024 — and neither ever covered the kapok. So treat this as an organic-cotton, kapok pillow with no current third-party certificate. On Amazon it holds 3.2 stars from 15 reviews, and returns are 30 days, unused only, with the buyer paying return shipping. It earns its place because nothing else here gives a soft, vegan, plastic-free pillow.

A memory foam pillow is not proven harmful, but it is the material with the measured emissions, and it is almost all plastic. The best-selling example is the Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow, with more than 63,000 Amazon ratings. Amazon lists its fill as 76% visco polyurethane foam and 24% polyester gel fiber, its cover as 60% polyester and 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon, and its inner liner as 100% polyester. Coop lists CertiPUR-US for the foam and GREENGUARD Gold for the pillow, and it offers a 100-night guarantee and a five-year warranty for $89 Queen.
That GREENGUARD Gold certificate is a real emissions limit, and it puts Coop well ahead of an uncertified foam pillow. But it does not change what the pillow is made of, and Amazon's own review summary notes that several customers report an awful smell at unboxing. If you want foam's feel with a certificate behind it, Coop is the defensible foam choice. If you are trying to get plastic out of your bed, it does not belong on this list, which is why we do not rank it.
Which Certifications Actually Mean Something on a Pillow?
Four labels are worth looking for, and each covers a different thing. A pillow can carry one and not the others, so read which part of the pillow a certificate covers, and who holds it.

Two things follow. First, GOTS and GOLS tell you the fiber is organic; GREENGUARD Gold tells you what the finished pillow gives off. The Naturepedic pillows are the only ones here that carry both kinds. Second, the word “natural” on its own is a claim, not a certificate. A pillow described as natural latex with no GOLS, or organic cotton with no named standard, may still be good — Hullo is — but you are taking the maker's word for it. Indoor air already carries more VOCs than outdoor air; the EPA says concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors, up to ten times higher, which is why an emissions certificate is worth having on anything in the bedroom.
Which Pillow Fill Is Right for You: Latex, Wool, Buckwheat or Kapok?
Pick by how you sleep and what you cannot use. All four are free of polyurethane foam and polyester fill, so the choice is about feel, care and allergies.
If you are coming from memory foam: latex
Latex is the closest feel to foam, springier and less sinking, and shredded latex (Naturepedic) lets you tune the height while a solid block (Turmerry) holds one shape. Rule it out if anyone in the bed has a latex allergy. NIOSH has estimated 1% to 6% of the general population is sensitized to latex, and a 2016 review in the Journal of Occupational Health put the average general-population prevalence at 4.3%.
If you sleep hot: buckwheat or wool
Buckwheat is the coolest because air moves straight through the hulls. Wool stays drier than foam by wicking moisture away. Buckwheat is firm and heavy; wool is softer and settles over the first weeks.
If you want vegan: buckwheat or kapok
Buckwheat for firm support, kapok for a soft, down-like pillow. Neither contains animal fiber or latex.
If allergies are the reason you are shopping
Put the cover first. The 2004 mite study found a tightly woven cover stopped every mite that a standard synthetic cover let through, so choose a removable, washable cover and wash it often. Pair the pillow with a HEPA air purifier for allergies if dust is the trigger.
Side, back or stomach
The sleep-zone data above found a pillow's emissions reach you most when you lie on your side, which is also the position that needs the tallest pillow. Side sleepers get the most out of an adjustable fill; stomach sleepers usually want the thinnest setting or a small size.
