Why it's safe for your family

The whole object is metal, and the only consumable is a flat steel blade. Nothing plastic is thrown away in the use of it, including the box it arrives in.
The machining is the point: blade exposure is held so tight that very little blade protrudes, which is why this razor feels forgiving to people who expect a safety razor to bite.

Yes — it is a shaving handle, not a structural part. Aluminum keeps it light and corrosion-resistant in a wet bathroom. The blade does the cutting and is replaced regularly regardless.

Which blades fit?

Any standard double-edge blade, which is the reason this format has survived a century. Buy a sampler pack: blade preference is personal and the difference between brands is larger than people expect.

Is it good for a beginner?
