Avoid melamine toddler plates, which are a plastic resin and should not be heated, and avoid plates with a separate suction ring, where food gets in behind the ring. Note that suction works on smooth surfaces only — it will not grip a textured or wooden table.

On a smooth table or a high-chair tray, yes, and it takes an adult knack to lift. On wood grain, textured plastic or a cloth, no suction mat of any brand will hold. That is a surface question, not a product defect.

Does silicone hold smells?

It can pick up strong odors from oily food. Run it through a hot dishwasher cycle or bake it briefly in a warm oven and the smell lifts. It does not stain the way plastic does.

Is silicone safe in the microwave?

Yes for reheating baby food at normal temperatures. Avoid using it under a broiler or in a very hot oven with fatty food, which is when silicone is stressed beyond what it is rated for.
