Is stainless steel cold to eat from?
It is room temperature like any plate, and it takes on the temperature of the food quickly. Warm food warms the plate; it does not chill a meal the way a plate straight from the fridge would.
Why does the ring come off?
So it can be cleaned. Any suction plate collects moisture and food debris between the ring and the plate; a fixed ring makes that a permanent problem. Take it off with the dishes, not once a month.
Can it go in the microwave?
No. It is metal. This is the honest daily inconvenience of a steel plate, and the reason many families own both a steel plate and a silicone one.
