Why it's safe for your family

  • Memory foam is polyurethane, a petrochemical foam that off-gasses when new and breaks down into dust as it ages. Natural latex is a different material entirely: sap tapped from rubber trees, foamed and cured.
  • Sleep On Latex states GOLS certification — the Global Organic Latex Standard, which requires the raw latex to be certified organic and sets limits on what can be added during manufacture.
  • The cover is GOTS certified organic cotton, so the layer nearest you is also a certified natural fiber rather than a synthetic knit.
  • Latex is naturally resilient and breathable in a way foam is not: it pushes back rather than slowly sinking, and it does not hold body heat the way memory foam is known for.

What to avoid instead

Avoid memory foam and "gel foam" toppers, which are polyurethane whatever the marketing calls them. Note the real exclusion here: latex is a natural rubber product, so anyone with a latex allergy should not buy one — wool is the alternative that solves the same problem.

How we verify — and what we don't

Straight answer: we're a research team, not a testing lab. Here's exactly what our rating is based on — and what it isn't — so you can weigh it honestly.

What we check

  • What the product is made of, from the maker's own specs and product listing.
  • Whether any part that touches you or your food uses PTFE, PFAS, plastic, or a coating that can degrade.
  • Peer-reviewed research on how that material behaves when heated, scratched, washed, or worn.
  • Known failure modes — how the product actually breaks down in a real home.

What we don't do

  • We have not chemically tested this specific unit in a lab.
  • We don't take payment to rate a product higher — there is no sponsored placement.
  • We don't show star ratings or "trusted by thousands" counts we can't stand behind.
What gets a product rejected

Anything that adds a known microplastic, PFAS, or off-gassing source — a non-stick coating, a plastic surface against food or skin, vinyl/PVC — is downgraded or cut. We only list what clears that bar.

Don't take our word for it — check the sources yourself Sleep On Latex's product details

Common questions

Does it smell when new?
Natural latex has a faint rubbery smell that fades over days with the cover off and some air. It is a different thing from the chemical off-gassing of new polyurethane foam, both in what it is and how long it lasts.
What if I am allergic to latex?
Then do not buy a latex topper. Latex allergy is a genuine and sometimes serious thing, and no cover makes it a non-issue. A wool topper gives you the pressure relief and temperature regulation without any rubber.
How long does latex last?
Considerably longer than polyurethane foam, which is the practical argument for the price. Foam loses support as its cell structure collapses; latex holds its resilience for many years.
