Why it's safe for your family

No polyurethane foam. A conventional crib mattress is a polyurethane foam core, which is the single largest synthetic mass in most nurseries and the thing this mattress is built to replace.
Naturepedic states GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill, and that the mattress is made without polyurethane foam, flame retardants or added allergens.
The waterproof surface is food-grade polyethylene rather than vinyl. That distinction matters: PVC vinyl waterproofing needs plasticizers to stay flexible, and polyethylene does not.

Is this really plastic-free? Yes — and here's why

A baby spends 12–16 hours a day inches from the crib mattress, so what it is made of matters more than almost any other purchase. Standard mattresses use polyurethane foam under a vinyl (PVC) cover — the combination that off-gasses and sheds particles. This one is organic cotton and wool: natural fibers, no foam, no vinyl.

Avoid conventional foam crib mattresses and any waterproof layer made of PVC vinyl. Safe sleep comes before any material argument: a crib mattress must be firm and must fit the crib with no gap at the sides, and nothing soft belongs in the crib with a sleeping baby.

What gets a product rejected

Common questions

How is the waterproofing different from a plastic cover?

It is food-grade polyethylene bonded to the surface rather than a PVC vinyl layer. Vinyl needs plasticizers to stay soft; polyethylene does not need them at all. That is why this mattress can be waterproof without adding the chemistry a waterproof cover usually brings.

Is it firm enough?

Crib mattresses are firm by regulation and by design, and they should feel much firmer than an adult mattress. If a crib mattress feels plush, that is a safe-sleep problem rather than a comfort feature. Check the fit too: no more than two fingers of gap between mattress and crib side.

What does GREENGUARD Gold actually test?

Chemical emissions into indoor air, measured in a chamber. It is a different question from an organic certification, which is about the fiber and its processing. For an object a baby breathes over for thousands of hours, the emissions test is the one worth looking for, and this mattress carries both.
