Avoid polyester and microfiber crib sheets. More important than the fiber: never use a sheet that does not fit your mattress snugly, and never add a second layer under the baby. A loose sheet is a genuine sleep hazard whatever it is made of.

Common questions
How snug is snug enough?
The sheet should not lift at the corners when you tug it, and there should be no slack across the surface. If it pulls off a corner easily, it is the wrong size for that mattress — do not use it.
How many do I need?
At least three: one on the crib, one in the wash, one in the cupboard for two in the morning. This is the item where quantity matters more than any other in the nursery.
Does organic cotton matter more here?
