Does silk floss shred?
It can with very tight contacts or a rough filling edge, where PTFE glide floss slides through. That is the honest trade. Waxed silk handles most mouths well; if yours shreds it consistently, that is worth mentioning to your dentist regardless of floss.
Is it really compostable?
The silk thread is. The wax coating is typically candelilla or beeswax, which is also natural. Check the specific product for its wax, and compost the used thread rather than binning it.
Is it more expensive per use?
