Why it's safe for your family

  • Bare cast iron with a pre-applied seasoning of vegetable oil — no synthetic coating on either the griddle or the grill side.
  • The release surface is polymerized oil that you maintain by cooking, so it is repairable rather than disposable when it wears.
  • With no coating, there is no temperature limit imposed by a polymer, so it handles the high heat that grill marks and a proper sear actually need.
  • One solid piece of iron with nothing bonded to it — nothing can delaminate, blister or flake off into food.

Is this really PFAS-free? Yes — and here's why

A non-stick griddle is metal with a fluoropolymer film on it, and that film is what fails — scratched by a spatula, degraded by the high heat grilling needs. This is one piece of cast iron with seasoning on it, and seasoning is oil that heat has turned into a hard layer. There is no applied polymer to break down.

What to avoid instead

This replaces non-stick griddles and electric grills, which pair a fluoropolymer coating with exactly the high heat that degrades it fastest.

How we verify — and what we don't

Straight answer: we're a research team, not a testing lab. Here's exactly what our rating is based on — and what it isn't — so you can weigh it honestly.

What we check

  • What the product is made of, from the maker's own specs and product listing.
  • Whether any part that touches you or your food uses PTFE, PFAS, plastic, or a coating that can degrade.
  • Peer-reviewed research on how that material behaves when heated, scratched, washed, or worn.
  • Known failure modes — how the product actually breaks down in a real home.

What we don't do

  • We have not chemically tested this specific unit in a lab.
  • We don't take payment to rate a product higher — there is no sponsored placement.
  • We don't show star ratings or "trusted by thousands" counts we can't stand behind.
What gets a product rejected

Anything that adds a known microplastic, PFAS, or off-gassing source — a non-stick coating, a plastic surface against food or skin, vinyl/PVC — is downgraded or cut. We only list what clears that bar.

Common questions

Does it work on my stove?
It spans two burners, so it works on gas and electric coil well. On smooth glass-top ranges, be careful: it is heavy, and dragging it can scratch the glass — lift, never slide. Some manufacturers advise against heavy cast iron on glass tops entirely, so check your range's manual.
How do I clean it without wrecking the seasoning?
Hot water and a stiff brush or a chain-mail scrubber while it is still warm, then dry it on the burner and wipe a thin film of oil in. Modern dish soap will not strip a well-built seasoning, but soaking it or running it through the dishwasher will cause rust.
Is it heavy?
Yes — genuinely heavy, and that is the main reason people stop using cast iron. Handle it with two hands, and if lifting a heavy pan two-handed is difficult, a lighter carbon steel pan gives you the same coating-free surface at much less weight.
