Common questions

Is the enamel itself safe — what about lead and cadmium?
Worth understanding properly. Enamel is powdered glass fused to the iron at very high heat, and historically lead and cadmium compounds were used in glazes to lower melting points and produce bright reds and oranges. Modern cookware from established brands is made to comply with FDA limits on how much heavy metal can actually migrate into food, which is measured by leach testing rather than by whether an element is present in the glass. The practical rule: buy from a brand that leach-tests, and retire any enameled pot once the interior enamel is chipped or crazed, because that exposes the layer underneath.
Is it non-stick?
No, and it is not meant to be. Enamel is a smooth glass surface, not a release coating — eggs will stick. It is built for braising, stewing, baking bread and searing, where you want fond sticking to the pot to build a sauce. If you want eggs to slide, that is a different pan.
How is it different from Le Creuset?
Both are enameled cast iron and both do the same job. Le Creuset is made in France, is lighter for its capacity, has a smoother enamel finish and costs several times more. Lodge is heavier and plainer but performs the same braise. The price gap buys finish, weight and warranty, not a safer cooking surface.
